Most of us like reading stories about ancient times and fantasize that our ancestors’ lives were easy and romantic, but were they really? 24-year-old Russian man Pavel Sapozhnikov decided to see what his ancestors’ lives were really like by spending 6 months living in 10th-century conditions.
“The idea is to see if a modern man can survive alone in an early medieval environment, what impact this kind of lifestyle will have on his psychological state” says Alexey Ovcharenko, who is the driving force behind the “Alone in the Past” project.
For six months – until March 22 – Pavel will live in a medieval farm without electricity, running water, Internet access and other modern comforts. The autumn and winter seasons were chosen on purpose – scientists want to explore the everyday challenges faced by medieval people during the toughest time of the year.
If given the chance, would you be brave enough to live alone in the past?

So great! I'd love to do something like this! It would take a long to time to prepare and learn the necessary skills, but I think a hard simple life on the land would be a most rewarding one. I wish you success!
Not a very revealing experiment because he lacks one of the most important elements of medieval (or any human period) life: other people. While there have always been hermits they are pretty rare. Medieval society like any society existed on the principle of shared labor. A medieval farm would have at least one or two other people
... To help with tasks, probably many more. While it is cool what he is doing, living history groups take up this sort if challenge all the time. Of course he does have people there: someone took these photos.
I'm wondering what he fed the animals, especially the chickens. The place doesn't look large enough to store months of grain, and even with goats clearing the snow to get at the grass, that would be a pretty limited diet for the chickens. Does he have something more nutritionally dense to feed the birds? Interesting stuff!
I agree with M.A. Cramer/Valgard about the shared labor thing i mean even in the medieval times there were always other people around....but i would love to try the same thing in a sense ..i do medieval reinactment so i would love to live it for real....
stupid. its called amish they do it every day, this is just a waste of time story to fill up a web page, and to the people that say amazing, how is this amazing? it's called survival, something most people dont know about because their stupid and lazy.
Interesting experience for him. I was most interested in the tools he was using and the clothing, as far as how well it held up to the rigorous daily use. Im sure there were occasions when early medieval folk spent long periods of time alone, depending on how remote their farm was from other villages and what time of year it was. Its obviously dangerous to leave the safety of shelter and food during the winter.
Looks good to me! Sigh me up. But I want a full year. The only problem is that people didn't live alone back then, unless they were outlawed. Its just to much work for one person to keep a farm running.
He probably just wanted to do this for himself as a rite of passage. He might not have been able to convince anyone else to live with him in this environment for that long, as modern people are too frightened generally to leave their comfortable and excessive and extravagant modern lifestyles.

If he truly wanted to replicate the experience, he would have left out the modern crafted axe, the modern knives, the woven string/twine, the modern sanded/shaped wood planks, etc. Just saying. In those times it would have been crude tools unless you were rich enough to pay a blacksmith.
