On Dec 29th 2013, the Guangdong Police force raided the meth-cooking village and arrested 182 people and confiscated 3 tonnes of methamphetamine and 23 tonnes of ingredients.
The village's dominant surname is Cai and has a population of 14,000 people. The police made their first arrest on the mayor of the village, who was at the city that day with a couple of henchmen to try to threaten the police into releasing his cousin, the one who started the business.
3000 policemen were deployed in the raid.
The police force stated that there were a couple more villages like the Cai village. But this is the biggest out of them all.
When the police raided the mayor's house, they found 350kg of meth.
The village first attracted attention in 2011 when people reported of a constant smell of weird chemicals from the village.
Each box weighs roughly 1 kg, Over 20% of the villagers were directly involved or invested in the business.
Trucks of ephedra grass were left unattended. The village would usually extract ephedrine out of the grass. Ephedrine is one of the main ingredients in cooking meth.
Meth waiting to crystalise.
Police said the village purchases ephedra from other provinces such as Inner Mongolia and Anhui. One truck can load up to 15 tonnes of ephedra. One tonne of ephedra can be distilled in to 6-7 kg of ephedrine. They then produce roughly 4 kg of meth.
The police department stated they attempted to raid the village twice before.
But some corrupt officials tipped the village off.
When the police tried to raid before, the villagers would surround them with 2-3 hundred motorcycles, Most villagers were equipped with model guns to scare them off.
But some of them armed themselves with AK47s, home-made grenades, bows and crossbows. Some would stand on the roof and pour sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, ingredients to make meth.
Some villagers cooked in their basements. But the brave ones would cook out in the open and store products on the alleyways between 2 houses.
The police said the cooking process became simpler and took shorted time. This in turn meant bigger production volume and cheaper price. 1 kg of meth used to value hundreds of thousands RMB (50-70 thousand USD). Now they are traded at 10,000 and sometimes even 7000RMB (15-10,000 USD).
The rudimentary equipments used by the villagers to cook meth. Not as scientific as walter white, but they suffice.
